Maeve's sports career on track

Senior School

16 March 2018

Year 11 student Maeve Taheny undertook work experience at the Indoor World Championships for Athletics at the NIA from Thursday 1 – Sunday 4 March 2018.

As an Athlete Logistics volunteer Maeve was expected to assist in conducting medal ceremonies and to help to organise the athletes. This was a challenging role for a number of reasons, including communicating with athletes who were unable to speak English and ensuring athletes were ready to collect their medal according to a very tight time schedule for television cameras, presentations and ICT (one ceremony started at '17.45:30'!). However, Maeve found the role to be very rewarding.

Taking part in the medal ceremonies meant that she was able to meet all of the medal winners, including Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Andrew Pozzi, and Greg Rutherford who was in attendance as a BBC presenter. Maeve was lucky enough to spend time with him, cheering on Team GB! Jeremy Corbyn was also in attendance to discuss grass-roots athletics.

Maeve is hoping to pursue a career in sports management and has called the experience “highly enjoyable and eye-opening”.
