Lively Discussion at Book Club

Sixth Form

31 March 2023

As well as their A level set texts, our Year 12 and 13 English Literature students are expected to engage in reading a wide variety of novels. This month, the English departments organised a book club meeting for our groups. There are two groups in both Year 12 and 13 and they either study Gothic or Dystopian literature, the reason why we chose a book that had elements of both genres for our first meeting. I selected ‘Heroes and Villains’ by Angela Carter. Carter is never one to shy away from controversial subject matter and this novella was no exception.

There was a lively discussion about whether any topics were off limits in literature and the lead character, Marianne, who is a victim of violence yet a powerful female figure who, it can be argued, perpetrates brutal acts herself. From our first meeting I could see that our English students this year enjoy being challenged!
