Librarian's Top Picks

Senior School

10 May 2019

Don't know what to read next? Stuck reading the same books over and over? Want a suggestion you can trust? These top picks will include books from all genres, new or old, and are hand-picked by the librarian to pique your interest. The best bit is they are all available in the school library.

The Outcast - by Taran Matharu - suitable for all
‘The Outcast’ is the prequel to Taran Matharu’s excellent Summoner series. This story explores the background and struggles of Arcturus, a vital but mysterious character in the preceding books. Similar to Fletcher, Arcturus has it hard in life and must come to terms with being a summoner whilst being bullied, threatened and even hunted down. With orc battles, magic and politics this book is an amazing read - even if you haven’t read the others yet!

Gather The Daughters - by Jennie Melamed - suitable Year 9+
‘Gather The Daughters’ is a shortlisted novel by Jennie Melamed. It’s set on a small isolated island, where a community lives by its own rules. Boys grow up knowing they will one day reign inside and outside the home, while girls know they will be married and pregnant within moments of hitting womanhood. But before that time comes, there is an island ritual that offers children an exhilarating reprieve. Every summer they are turned out onto their doorsteps to roam wild: they run, they fight, they sleep on the beach and build camps in trees. They are free. It is at the end of one of these summers, that one of the younger girl’s witnesses something she was never supposed to see. Returning home, muddy and terrified, she clutches a truth that could unravel their carefully constructed island world forever. A haunting read for the brave hearted!

Positively Teenage - by Nicola Morgan - suitable for all
‘Positively Teenage’ is the latest in Nicola Morgan’s books exploring the science behind teenage behaviour, how to help manage it and look after yourself. With others covering life online, friendships and the teenage mind itself she is a must read for anyone. In this book, Nicola explores teenage wellbeing. It is full of practical, proven strategies for physical and mental health - from doing things you enjoy to learning new skills; looking after your diet, exercise and attitude to being healthy online; getting great sleep to understanding your personality - allowing you to take control of many areas of your life. Perfect for everyone, teenage or not!

The Bubble Wrap Boy - by Phil Earle - suitable for all
‘The Bubble Wrap Boy’ is a standalone book by Phil Earle. Have you ever felt like your parents worry too much about you? Do they wrap you up in bubble wrap before you leave the house? Charlie has spent his whole life unable to do anything without his mum approving, checking and double checking it first! When he finds out he loves skateboarding, it’s obvious his mum will say no. So faced with no other options he does it anyway. A secret that in turn will uncover his parent’s secrets and Charlie may just find his world turned upside down. A relatable and funny book about parents trying their best (and not necessarily getting it right)!
