Geographers in the Field

Sixth Form

17 February 2023

This week the Year 12 Geographers travelled to Dorset in order to complete fieldwork which will help with the completion of A Level coursework projects. We travelled down to Swanage Youth hostel on Sunday evening and started filling our ‘geography brains’ first thing on Monday morning with an introductory classroom lesson.

After this, we were straight out into the field, conducting fieldwork on infiltration rates and carbon storage in Durlston Country Park. Tuesday was our coasts day where we investigated longshore drift, wave length and frequency, coastal management techniques and sand dune transects - Lucy even went for a very quick paddle! On Wednesday we headed into Poole for some Urban fieldwork, studying regeneration and land use.

Evenings were spent with follow up lessons as well as a few competitive board games. Finally on Thursday we conducted our own mini-investigations in Swanage before heading back to school, very tired and with very full ‘geography brains’!
