On Your Marks, Get Set....Bake!

02 July 2021

The much anticipated inter-house Bake Off began on 14 June and, judging by the high standard of entries to this year's competition, it seems like the girls have been using lockdown as an opportunity to practise and perfect their baking skills.

The theme this year the great British ‘Staycation’, a term we are all now very familiar with. Year 7 cooked Camping Cupcakes, Year 8 were tasked with baking Boating Biscuits, Year 9 constructed Seaside Sandwich cakes, Year 10 whipped up their best Glamping Gateaux and Year 11/12 were given a general theme of Festival Fun. House Captains and Staff were given free rein to produce a bake of their choice. It was down to the judges - Mrs Macro, Mrs Syer, Mrs Crimp, Mrs Rees, Mrs Campbell and Mrs Harris - to cast the final votes to decide the winning bakes from amongst a very high standard of entries.

Well done to Tiffany Latham who won the Year 7 prize for St. David’s house. As keen campers themselves, the judges loved the detail in her cupcake campsite, complete with blazing campfire.

Sophia Yaqoob took the Year 8 prize for St. Andrew. The judges were impressed by the high technical skills that were involved in making her palmier biscuit boat which involved painstaking construction and deliciously unusual combinations of flavours.

St. David won the Year 9 round thanks to May Hadley’s fabulous marble cake beach. The judges loved the waves in the cake, the beach house decoration and the realistic crushed biscuit ‘sand’ complete with sandcastles!

Amy Blackledge won the Year 10 round for St. Francis, with the judges praising the very detailed camping pitch featuring a realistic and detailed campfire, bunting and even a pair of happy campers outside their tent. They also noted the well-risen sponge.

Isabel Jones racked up another win for St. David in the Year 11/12 competition. Her biscuits incorporated an impressive number of aspects of the festival theme and she executed some fine piping skills.

The joint winners from the House Officials were Nicole Barker for St. David and Vibha Patel for St. Patrick. The judges remarked that it was clear how much time and care Nicole had put into her campsite decoration and that the pen work was excellent. Vibha’s St. Patrick dancefloor design was a hit with the judges and the symmetry of her icing was noted in particular.

The final round was the Staff round, which was won by Miss Mahmood and her staycation-themed vanilla sponge, giving St. Patrick another victory. The judges described her cake as an outstanding piece of culinary artwork. They loved way the bake looked, the two-tone marbling ‘sea’ and the moulded chocolate shells.

Well done to everyone who submitted an entry! The overall winning house will be announced in final assembly at the end of term.
