All That Glitters...

Westbourne

21 May 2021

A Beyond the Curriculum Day in Westbourne gave girls in Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception the opportunity to find out about jewellery from the past and from other cultures and to share examples of their own.

Mrs Hartley started the day with a special assembly sharing some information and stories about her favourite jewellery.

In their classroom Nursery girls shared jewellery from home including Bangles from Thailand, Chinese charms and Indian keyrings!  They also made bracelets by threading beads and tribal inspired paper plate necklaces.

In Kindergarten, they became jewellery artisans and worked with a variety of different materials.  They used wood and gems to design necklaces, made rings using clay and decorated their own cuffs using tubes. The girls also enjoyed looking at jewellery from other countries.  It was particularly interesting to see an example of layered coral beads worn in Nigeria!

Girls in Reception researched and made Egyptian jewellery and discussed the pyramids. Some even learnt a new dance! Others made necklaces and bracelets using great fine motor control and designed and made new crowns for the Queen. They all enjoyed watching videos made by Year 6 girls who shared their crafts from their studies of the Egyptians. Some girls shared precious jewels from home through sharing photographs on seesaw.

The girls gained much information during the day and enjoyed learning about jewellery, past and present.
