The World of Books

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form

13 March 2020

Girls at EHS clearly have a love of literature and this was very much in evidence last week when the whole school community of pupils and staff dressed as book characters in celebration of World Book Day.

In Westbourne, our youngest girls came to school dressed as either a Mr Men or Little Miss characters and they had made a tremendous effort, as did the staff!  The girls also completed various practical activities on the same theme. The new books that have arrived from the Collins supplier were an added bonus.

In the Prep Department, girls in Years 1 - 6 came dressed as a favourite character.  The list was endless, and the costumes very creative. We started the day with an assembly that was based on the wealth of non-fiction books that celebrate the achievements of women in many fields including science, space travel, art, and pioneering exploits both today and in the past. It is clear that books can inspire us to achieve a great deal. Girls were also asked to choose a character from a book that they would like to be and to explain why:

‘I would choose Winnie the Pooh because I have known him since I was a baby.’
‘I would like to be Willy Wonka because I love chocolate.’
I would like to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz as she has lots of fun adventures.’
‘I would like to be Meg McCaffrey as she is an inspiration and a great female role model.’

Efforts in Senior School and Sixth Form were no less enthusiastic with lots of much-loved characters from literature brought to life.

Thank you to everyone for making this World Book Day such a success!
