Poet Matt Windle Visits EHS

Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed some hugely engaging poetry sessions with Matt Windle, Birmingham Poet Laureate (2016-18) and professional boxer (Commonwealth champion - Super Flyweight).
Matt spoke winsomely about his love of poetry in particular, encouraging EHS girls to follow their passions in life, whatever they may be. He was able to create a spontaneous spoken poem which incorporated many of the girls' names, from each year group across the two sessions.
He allowed girls to see the influence of Shakespeare on modern hip-hop and rap lyrics, and was able to give them many insights into how easy it is to create poetry and get into something which might seem unpopular or strange to peers. Matt also spoke candidly about his own time at school and his work with young offenders and people who have made some poor choices in life.
It was a thoroughly motivational and enjoyable afternoon and we look forward to having Matt visit us again.
