Nursery to Year Six Highlights
13 June 2025
Counting Five Little Ducks
In Nursery the rhyme of the week has been Five Little Ducks. The girls have enjoyed acting out the rhyme using duck props and singing as they played with ducks in the water tray. They explored numbers by placing ducks on five frames and ordering numerals with matching duck pictures to help develop subitising and counting skills. The girls also loved sharing the story Five Little Ducks by Ian Beck. Outdoors, they worked together to make cakes in the mud kitchen.
Zigzags and Zebras
In Kindergarten, girls spent time learning all about the letter z! To start with, they practiced making zigzags both inside and outside the classroom! The children used markers, crayons, chalk, and even bricks to form zigzag patterns. They also created their very own zebras. Using black and white paper, the children ripped strips to make zebra stripes. They carefully glued the pieces onto zebra outlines, learning about patterns and animals at the same time! Girls also spent time practicing how to write the letter z, using fun tools like whiteboards, sand trays and finger tracing
Reception’s Mini Beast Hunt Adventure!
Reception children took part in a Mini Beast Hunt around the school grounds. As part of their topic on Creatures Great and Small, the girls were invited to become nature explorers for the afternoon. Equipped with magnifying glasses, bug pots, and lots of excitement, they set off in small groups in search of mini beasts. They visited the outdoor classroom, looked under flowers and turned over logs and stones. Girls discovered wood lice, ladybirds, spiders and worms. Everyone worked well together and afterwards they discussed what they had found with their friends. In the afternoon, they drew and painted their discoveries and wrote about their adventure. Well done, Reception - what brilliant little explorers you are!
Toys, Toys, Toys!
Year One have been learning all about toys this term — including the history of toys, how toys move, and the forces involved in Science. This week, the girls have been exploring old and new toys in History. They looked at traditional cup-and-ball toys, and then in Art, they had the chance to make their own using papier-mâché — lots of sticky fun! After painting their cup-and-ball toys, the girls had the opportunity to play with their creations. It was great fun playing with their new toys!
A Stitch in Time
Following on from the beautiful Christmas stockings produced during the Autumn Term, Year Two pupils have continued to develop their needlework skills. This time the pupils have created beautiful fabric flowers. After choosing complimentary colours of felt, the pupils used over stitch to attach the two pieces. They then chose a button with either two or four holes and attached this to the centre of their flower. The finished pieces are fantastic and the pupils have learned valuable new skills. Who knows, maybe we have some future surgeons in Year Two!
Pollination and Strawberries
As part of their Science curriculum, Year Three pupils have been exploring the process of pollination. They learnt the scientific names for the parts of a flower and discovered how seeds are produced through the process of pollination. To bring their learning to life, they took on the role of bees, imagining what it would be like to pollinate flowers and writing detailed accounts from the perspective of a bee visiting plants. To enhance their understanding, the girls visited the school allotment, where they observed the development of strawberries at various stages, from the initial flower to the ripening fruit. They even saw some insects pollinating plants!
Live Tennis Action!
Year Four had a fully packed day at the tennis on Wednesday 4th June. The courts were looking beautiful and Year Four were able to take part in a tennis lesson with the Priory coaches to start our morning. They then moved to brightly coloured deck chairs for a snack and then on to the fun zone, with mini tennis and swing ball. A picnic lunch was next, then... Centre Court! The girls watched Heather Watson play some amazing and quick shots against a French tennis player. Lots of fabulous questions were asked by the girls to learn all the rules of the game. Onto a question and answer session with a professional English tennis player- Jay. A fantastic and inspirational day.
Year Five Shine with Symmetry!
Year Five have been diving into the fascinating world of symmetry and reflection — and what a journey it has been! With focus and precision, the girls have been exploring how shapes can be mirrored across a line of symmetry. They have shown growing confidence in identifying symmetrical patterns and reflecting shapes accurately. The children have impressed with their careful attention to detail, ensuring that the 'other side' of each shape truly mirrors the original. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and resilience as they work through increasingly complex challenges. Looking ahead, Year Five are set to take their understanding even further as they move into symmetry within four quadrants. This next step will allow them to apply their skills in a more advanced mathematical setting, using coordinates and a greater depth of spatial reasoning.
Writing for a Greener Future
Over recent weeks, Year Six have explored an inspiring writing unit on eco-awareness and persuasive letters. The girls wrote passionately to various companies about issues that mattered to them, including ocean pollution, plastic waste, fast fashion, solar energy, electric vehicles and supermarket packaging. Some even chose to write to Mrs Hobson with thoughtful ideas on how we can make our own school more eco-friendly. Their letters showcased impressive writing skills, including the effective use of modal verbs, imperative verbs and persuasive techniques such as emotive language and rhetorical questions. Many also challenged themselves to include complex structures like subjunctive clauses.
It was wonderful to see how deeply they engaged with the topics, applying their grammar skills creatively to make a real impact. Their commitment to raising awareness and
taking action to help the planet was truly inspiring, demonstrating both their growing writing skills and their sense of social responsibility.
