Challenge has been in evidence across the Prep School this week. I strongly believe that challenges are integral to every aspect of a child’s educational journey, a fundamental facet that cannot and should not be sidestepped, but that help to shape the adults our pupils become. Whilst they may seem daunting and uncomfortable at times, challenges can serve to provide purpose and can be incredibly rewarding. I spoke recently with a family who discussed the fact that their daughter was afraid to make mistakes, the child was obsessed with perfection and found it extremely challenging when they got things wrong. For me, mistakes and challenge are an important part of a child’s educational and personal growth. I often tell the girls that mistakes are important because they ‘grow your brain’.
With academic excellence at the heart of everything we do, I want to see the girls being challenged and I want them to be brave enough to make mistakes. If they are to reach their true potential, they need to feel supported to overcome any challenges that give them that uncomfortable feeling. With anxiety become ever more prevalent in girls at an increasingly young age, it is imperative that we do everything we can to give our pupils the resilience they need to overcome challenges. Studies prove that in order to overcome your fears, you must face them...repeatedly.
Facing your fears and overcoming challenges has been at the forefront of all of our girls minds this week as they have carried out their formal assessments. The results from these assessments will help to demonstrate the progress our pupils have made over the course of the academic year but also to provide areas of focus for the new year. Many of our Year Six girls will continue their education within the Senior School at EHS, but for others they will be starting afresh, taking up places at Grammar School or scholarships at other independent schools.
But it is not only our Year Six girls who are thriving. This week, the wonderful Mme Hennous took four of our girls to the Live National Final of the Junior Language Challenge. These girls were from Years Three, Four and Five and they were excited, if a little apprehensive, about the challenge that lay ahead in this national competition. However, they did what our EHS Prep girls do best...they demonstrated courage, resilience, perseverance and excellence and the results were fabulous. Congratulations to Gurbani in Year Five who came 2nd in the whole country! Huge congratulations should also go to Inaayah and Inaya in Year Four who came 4th and 5th and a special mention must go to Ayana in Year Three who came 9th overall!
The evidence is clear, our girls are able to achieve academic excellence through our unique and nurturing all-girls environment. EHS Prep School produces well-rounded, thoughtful young women with bright futures ahead of them. I am incredibly proud of all of our girls and of their achievements this year and am not afraid to shout about it!
Have a super weekend!
