Celebrating Guide Dog Week

Senior School

02 July 2021

Last week the highly-anticipated Guide Dog Week took place in Senior School with workshops, quizzes and a special canine guest, Vixen the Guide Dog. Pupils from all year groups took part in biscuit treat making, toy making, training hints and tips, a ‘guess the sweets in the jar’ competition and purchased raffle tickets to win pet hampers. We finished the week off with a non-uniform day, all to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The charity is a fantastic organisation whose work covers many aspects. Breeding programmes, training and raising puppies, and matching dogs with visually impaired adults and children. It costs around £56,000 per puppy to become a fully trained Guide Dog, from birth to retirement. One person living with sight loss can expect to have up to 10 guide dogs over the course of their lifetime, amounting to half a million pounds just for one person.

In 2017, we set out to raise over £1,500 so we could take part in a “name a puppy” scheme which allowed us to sponsor and name our very own puppy, get pup-dates, photographs and the birth certificate for our school and we were delighted to achieve our goal. During this time, we sadly lost two students from our school community, sisters Grace and Mojo, in a tragic accident. Mojo would have now been at university and Grace would have been in our current Year 7 cohort. In their memory, we would like to name our first puppy Mojo. And after all our efforts from Guide Dog Week, we are also pleased to announce that we have successfully raised the second sum, allowing us to adopt a second puppy who we have named Grace.

We would like to welcome our two puppies, Grace and Mojo, to the EHS School Community and we are very much looking forward to getting pup-dates and even a visit from them soon!

Ever wondered what your pet gets up to when you are at school? To mark Guide Dog Week we created a fun video ‘Secret Life of Pets’ to show case EHS pets and how they fill their time when left to their own devices …. Watch Secret Life of EHS Pets below.
