A Walk in the (Wet) English Countryside for D of E

Sixth Form

18 February 2022

Sunday morning dawned damp, windy and cold - not ideal conditions for a long and arduous walk through the English countryside. Undeterred by the drizzle, our group of intrepid Gold Duke of Edinburgh students set out on their second practice expedition of the term, traversing Lapworth and the surrounding areas.

Dodging large puddles and trying (and failing) to avoid the mud the girls navigated the 18.6km course. Hungry and seeking shelter from the elements the girls found refuge at the local Cricket Club which at least gave a dry spot to eat their lunch. After a well-earned rest the girls regrouped, managing to remain cheerful and positive, even making friends with a playful canine companion out with his owner along the way, a welcome distraction from the miserable weather.

Tired and wet but delighted to have avoided getting lost or going off course, the girls finished the challenge by late afternoon having clocked up an impressive 28,000 steps each.

The group’s next challenge will take place in Malvern next month when they will be accompanied by Year 9 girls on Bronze.
