Game On for The Hayday Heroes House Football Tournament

Senior School | Sixth Form

27 June 2025

The future of football is female and here at EHS, we passionately believe in this beautiful game. It is so much more than a competition. It teaches us discipline, teamwork, communication, confidence, resilience, collaboration, leadership - and strength in every sense of the word. It builds stronger bonds in our relationships, friendships, and our community.

Following on from the successes of England’s own Lionesses, we seem to have embraced the sport here, and it has been wonderful to see us, as a school, challenge gender norms by redefining what girls can do - empowering each other by breaking stereotypes and inspiring one another to play team sports and, most importantly, to cheerlead for one another.

In memory of Ms Hayday (left), one of EHS’s biggest football fanatics and a much-loved teacher, EHS hosted the Hayday Heroes House Football Event.

On Wednesday 25 June, the House Captains took the new House football teams down to the Sports Field, ready to play against each other in an exciting tournament. Last year, St David’s were the winners so there were definitely some scores to settle, and the competitive rivalry had been building all week.

Who would become this year’s Hayday Heroes Football Champions?

First out on the pitch were David’s Dragons, and their mascot was (of course!) a dragon. Then came St Francis, otherwise known as Franchester United, whose mascots were fairies. St Patrick’s team, Patrick’s Panthers, were accompanied by panther mascots. Representing St Andrew were the St Andrew’s Villains, with an angel as their mascot. And finally, the team for St George, George’s Red Cross Rovers, had bears as their mascot.

Hilarious commentary was provided by Mr Rees and Mr Wiggins, and all games were played under the expert guidance of referees Mr Ball and Mr Coley. It was brilliant to see all of the girls demonstrating their speed, skills, and superhuman goal-scoring abilities to the delight of the crowd.

A big thank you must also go to Mrs Lee for bringing some much-needed fuel to the event. In true EHS style, there were plenty of cakes, treats, sweets and ice cream! All money raised will support Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Well done to St Patrick for winning the Year 7 and 8 competition, and congratulations to St David and St Andrew for drawing the Year 9 and 10 competition. Even though we’re sad it’s over, we’re already excited for next year’s event.
