A Glimpse into 1912: Preparing for GCSE English

Senior School

27 June 2025

Year 9 English teachers, along with Mr Woolley, Mrs Coley and Miss Wood, took Year 9 to the Black Country Living Museum. The aim of the trip was to lay some groundwork for their upcoming study of 1912, the setting of An Inspector Calls which will be their GCSE play to study in Year 10.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day, with two highlights being the pitch-black Mine Tour and the strict Victorian-style School Lesson, both thought-provoking and engaging experiences. They also had the chance to visit the Toll House, enjoy a classic bus tour, and explore an old-fashioned sweet shop, cake shop and fairground. The guides were fantastic: friendly, helpful, and full of knowledge about life in the early 20th century. The site offered so much to explore, it could easily have filled two full days, but even this brief visit was a valuable introduction. Fortunately, the sun shone on us throughout.

Pupil Maryam said: “We had an amazing time touring the area, experiencing what it was like as a pupil in 1912 and ending with a visit to the fairground and gift shop! Thank you to all the teachers who organised the trip.”
