From Textbooks to Treasures at the British Museum
20 June 2025
This week, a group of Year 10 students studying Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation travelled to London to visit the British Museum. Hot drinks and breakfast in hand, we gathered at Birmingham New Street station before making our way to London on the train.
Upon arrival, we enjoyed tours of the Greek and Roman Britain galleries. The ClassCiv girls were particularly excited to see artefacts from their GCSE textbook brought to life!
Next, we ventured to see the Elgin Marbles of the Parthenon, learning about their rich history. We debated the moral issue of the Elgin Marbles being in the UK or Greece!
The Latinists also explored galleries relating to their set texts, in particular visiting the busts of the Roman emperors which generated fascinating discussion on relationships, cancel culture and public image, proving how relevant the ancient world remains today.
In the afternoon the girls were free to explore and enjoy all the cultural galleries the museum has to offer. They were excited to tell us about the various artefacts and displays they had seen across Japan, Persia, the Middle East and many more.
We loved the day out to London and we are thrilled the students had a good time; perhaps they will return to the British Museum as part of an Enrich, Extend and Enjoy outing!
