Flowering Phenomenon

Westbourne

19 April 2024

EHS girls enjoy visiting our neighbours, the Botanical Gardens, throughout the year.

This week, after hearing on the national news about a special plant that only flowers every ten years, Reception girls made an impromptu visit to the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday afternoon.

They went to see the rare flowering plant Puya alpestris from the Chilean Andes. The blue-green flowers have bright orange pollen. Once it has flowered, it will die but only after producing thousands of seeds and new rosettes at the base of the old stem.

Reception girls could not believe that the next time they will see this plant flower, they will be fifteen years old!
