First place win for EHS in Schools Sailing Regatta

Preparatory | Senior School

28 June 2019

Seven Birmingham schools attended the Rockley Watersports sailing regatta on Tuesday 25 June with Megan (Year 10) and sister Millie (Year 6) representing EHS. The event operated two fleets; the Gold Fleet for sailors who have club sailing experience and the RYA OnBoard fleet for those who just sail through their school. Megan and Millie were both placed in the Gold Fleet against some tough competition.

The sailors were greeted by heavy and persistent rain, but at least there was plenty of wind! After a short briefing the gold fleet launched and set about two races prior to lunch and a further two after lunch whilst the OnBoard fleet conducted some simple ‘there and back again’ races against the clock.

In the Gold Fleet it was Millie who took the win in the first race sailing her RS Tera beautifully to maximise her points whilst the other boats sailed tactical races to cover each other off but also slowing each other down! As the boats came in for lunch after the second race there were five boats all tied for the lead on six points each so there was everything to play for in the afternoon.

In the final two races of the day Megan stayed focussed and despite dropping to 3rd in both races after the start she didn’t give up and caught the competition bit by bit and then used the rules to her advantage forcing them to change direction at a crucial moment, and taking the win in Race 3. In Race 4 she left it even later, overtaking the leader with a boat length to go to the finish line to take her second win of the day.

When the various handicaps were calculated Megan came out as Gold Fleet winner with Millie a creditable 5th overall and first Prep School sailor. Both girls thoroughly enjoyed representing EHS at this competitive and fun event.

Well done to them both!
