Prep PE Round Up

Preparatory

15 December 2022

During this term Reception and Year 1 girls have developed their agility, balance and coordination in a variety of fun multi-skills activities. They have pretended to be pirates, walked the plank, leapt over stepping-stones and been involved in a number of treasure hunts and team games along the way.

Year 1 have demonstrated a good understanding of body tension displaying strong shapes in a variety of jumps, rolls and balances in gymnastics. They will be developing skills and techniques, using hands and feet in Ball skills sessions next term.

Year 2 have incorporated their knowledge of the Great Fire of London into our Dance unit. They have explored timing, movement and levels through a range of themes and ideas including jobs, buildings, fire and even community spirit.

The Autumn Term has seen girls across Key Stage 2 developing their skills, knowledge and understanding in gymnastics, swimming and netball. Girls have worked together to perform paired sequences, acted as mini-coaches giving feedback to others and demonstrated their ability to cooperate, when working as part of a larger team.
Spanning a number of fun-filled afternoons over the last two weeks, every girl from Years 3 to 6 has represented their House in the eagerly anticipated House Netball Tournament. Girls demonstrated leadership skills, teamwork, and competence during match play. Without spoiling any surprises, Mrs Hartley revealed the winners of the coveted Inter House Netball Cup in Celebration Assembly on the last day of term.

This term has also seen the introduction of Basketball into the Year 6 Curriculum. For the vast majority of girls, prior to starting, they had little to no experience of the sport. Girls rose to the challenge of learning dribbling, shooting and defending skills. They have developed their understanding of the rules of play and have applied principles of attack and defence in small-sided games. It has been fantastic to see them grow in confidence each week.

Co-curricular Activities
The cold, dark mornings and afternoons have not dampened the spirit of EHS Squad Swimmers. They have worked extremely hard in training twice a week, gradually building strength and stamina. They always strive to improve their technique and have gelled brilliantly as a team. They thoroughly enjoyed their first fun gala against Norfolk House School and gave their all in the recent gala against Highclare School.

A selection of girls from EHS Netball Squad took part in a friendly Netball tournament at Bromsgrove School a little before the recent cold snap. They thoroughly enjoyed the morning of netball with six back-to-back matches and many goals scored. Good luck to Year 6 in their upcoming fixtures in the Birmingham Primary Schools Netball League, which will take place early in the New Year.

For most, Friday afternoon allows for some quiet and downtime. However, the excitement and energy of over 20 Year 5 and 6 pupils has kept the corridors ringing and energy high at EHS each week. This half term, City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club has delivered after school sessions each week. The girls are really enjoying this brand new club and are looking forward to continuing into the New Year with an exciting opportunity in the pipeline, to see a live game.  What a wealth of talent and opportunities we have.
