Inspiration at British Junior Open Squash

Preparatory

13 January 2023

Last week, Year 4 were delighted to have the exciting opportunity to attend the British Junior Open Squash Event at the University of Birmingham Sport and Fitness Centre. Renowned as the world's oldest and most prestigious junior tournament, the five-day platinum event hosted by England Squash brought together more than 650 junior players from all over the world, competing in the girls and boys U11s through to U19s.

All girls in Year 4 took great interest in the squash games that took place on that day. Girls saw first-hand the athleticism, endurance and resilience displayed by young players from Korea, Egypt, USA and Israel. The flags of all the competing countries surrounded the state-of-the-art all-glass courts, which allowed spectators to see all aspects of match play.

EHS girls also had the opportunity to set foot on pop up squash courts in an hour-long session where they were shown how to serve, rally and compete against their peers with the help of England Squash coaches. The afternoon proved to be a great success with many girls witnessing and experiencing 'a new sport'.

A number of girls surprised themselves at their ability to learn new skills like serving and directing the ball above the yellow line.  They quickly picked up the rules and showed good technique when lunging toward the ball to rebound it off the wall. Some remarked how much they 'loved it!'

Friday proved to be an inspiring afternoon for all who attended.
