Nursery to Year Six Highlights

Preparatory

29 November 2024

It has been another wonderful week in Nursery, Kindergarten and Prep, packed with creativity, exploration and fun. The teachers have shared some of the exciting activities the girls have enjoyed this week. Don’t forget to take a look at the gallery below for pictures!

Black and White

In Nursery, the children have been exploring the theme of black and white. During circle time, the girls shared items from home and had fun discussing them with their friends. They engaged in a fine motor activity by lacing black mittens with white wool, which helped develop hand-eye coordination. As part of their creative exploration, the girls experimented with mixing black and white paint, discovering that it created a new colour: grey! To celebrate No Pens Day, they took their learning outdoors, where the girls enjoyed using paintbrushes, stampers, sticks and leaves to create mud paintings.

Kindergarten Cricket!

Following the theme of 'c' this week, Kindergarten took part in an exciting indoor cricket lesson! The girls were thrilled to use cricket bats and balls to learn new skills and to practise their rolling, throwing and hitting! They enthusiastically used their bats to navigate balls around an obstacle course and took it in turns to hit the balls at colourful targets around the hall. The activities definitely helped to develop their hand-eye coordination and gave them a great taste of the fun that can be had playing cricket!

Lost Letters

On Tuesday, Reception and Kindergarten pupils were treated to the production of ‘Finding Santa’ at the MAC, Birmingham.  This much anticipated event started off with the excitement of travelling on the school minibus just a few miles down the road to the Midlands Art Centre. The story was about two elves called Tatty and Pumpkin who had one important mission, to bring everyone’s letters to Santa on Christmas Eve.  Unfortunately, on the way they have an accident and their sack full of letters fall out of the sleigh.  They then had to recover all the letters and get them back to Santa in time for Christmas!

The performance did not disappoint, as it was filled with colourful costumes, puppets and interactive moments, which the girls loved.  The snowfall effect during the finale had the girls even more excited about the magic of Christmas.  It was a memorable start to this season and judging by the laughter from pupils and staff, a good time was had by all!

Ridiculous!

Year One have decided to jump into the Christmas spirit and have started some Christmas Craft, in readiness for the start of December. The girls have been making wreaths for their classroom doors. In 1A, they have been getting creative with handprints and turning them into Reindeers and Christmas trees and in 1B they have been making sparkly baubles and holly. Watch this space for both classes’ amazing Christmas wreaths!! The girls have also been thinking about seasonal stories and they have created a display of the story of Ridiculous about a tortoise out in Winter. Have you ever heard of a tortoise out in Winter? RIDICULOUS!!

Design Technology

Year Two are starting to prepare for Christmas by making their own stockings in Art and Design lessons. The girls thought carefully about who their stocking was going to be for and how they wanted it to look, before creating a design to work from. The next step was to start sewing their design onto the felt using a needle and thread. Perseverance is definitely the EHS value that has been used by all of the girls in these lessons, as they try to thread their needle and knot the thread, with help from an adult and their friends as needed. The girls are enjoying sewing candy canes, presents, Christmas trees and stars onto their stockings, as well as personalising it with initials or a name. Well done girls!

Burgers and Milkshakes!

In Year Three, the girls have been learning about the features of instructional texts. They practised their comprehension skills by answering questions about the instructions for making a Mexican bean burger. In their Creative Writing lesson, they worked with their teachers to make a banana milkshake, identifying the imperative verbs used in the recipe. After tasting the milkshake, the students wrote detailed instructions on how to make one themselves, including helpful suggestions for possible variations.

Vegetable Shading

Year Four have been learning about light, tone and shading while drawing vegetables. They have used the light through the windows to create 3D pictures instead of flat 2D drawings. Their final drawing will be a group of vegetables, incorporating all that they have been practising. Look out on social media for the girls’ fabulous creations.

Mechanical Toys

Year Five have been busily constructing mechanical toys this half term. They each decided on a theme and then carefully considered the movements, this has helped to select the right CAM wheel for the job. Many new skills have been learnt, sawing being quite a tricky one! The toys will be completed in true ‘Christmas elf style’ ready for the holidays! It has been an ongoing project and the end results will definitely be something to be proud of.

Real-Life Discoveries in the Outdoors

Year Six took their Science learning outdoors to explore the diverse world of fungi on the school grounds. The class discovered a variety of fascinating specimens, including vibrant turkey tail shelf fungi, tiny phloeomana mushrooms, and puffball fungi cleverly hidden at the base of a cherry tree. They also found jelly ear fungi, which sparked plenty of excitement! Through their observations, the students learned about the vital role fungi play in nature, particularly in breaking down organic material and supporting ecosystems. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-world discoveries.
