Nursery to Year Six Highlights
11 July 2025
Calming Yoga
This week in Nursery, the girls took part in calming yoga sessions, learning different poses and practising their balance. This helped them to develop coordination, build core strength and supported their ability to focus and regulate their emotions. In the water tray, we explored ‘Gelli Baff’, which provided a new sensory experience. The girls loved the unusual texture and enjoyed scooping, pouring and squeezing it. Sensory play like this helps to develop fine motor skills, encourages language and curiosity and supports the girls in processing different tactile sensations.
Summer and Ice Cream Fun in Kindergarten!
This week in Kindergarten, the children have been learning all about summer through fun, hands on activities. As part of our seasonal theme, we explored one of Summer’s favourite treats, ice cream! The children enjoyed making their own ice creams from paper plates. They carefully decorated them with tissue paper, drew waffle cones and most importantly, added a chocolate flake! Each creation was unique and looked good enough to eat! Girls also created ice creams in the tuff tray. Some explored patterns using coloured items. They practised making repeating patterns like strawberry, vanilla, strawberry. Both activities brought the summer theme to life, combining creativity, learning and lots of fun!
Den Building
Reception girls spent part their last week of the Summer term building dens - and their imaginations! The classrooms were transformed into construction zones, filled with blankets, cushions, and dressing up boxes. Working in small groups, they planned and built their dens. We were impressed by the teamwork and communication on display as they negotiated roles and solved problems. The den building project was also a reflection of how much the girls have grown. From learning to share and listen, to showing resilience and independence. As the term draws to a close, pupils will no doubt remember this final week. Good luck on your next venture into Year One, girls.
Puppet Pandemonium at EHS!
What better way to end the term than with a little puppet magic? On Wednesday 7 July, the fabulous Major Mustard paid a visit to Edgbaston High School and he did not come alone! He brought a cast of quirky, charming puppets who took our Year One and Two girls on a whirlwind adventure around the world. From snowy mountains to sandy deserts, the puppet show tied in perfectly with the girls’ recent Geography topic – and kept everyone giggling from start to finish!
After playtime, the Year One girls headed to a special puppet workshop, armed with the puppets they had proudly created earlier in the term. With a little help from Major Mustard, they learned how to give their puppets personality, using voices, movements, and a sprinkle of imagination. It was a morning full of laughter, creativity, and unforgettable moments. A huge thank you to Major and Mrs Mustard for bringing a little puppet magic to EHS. The girls (and teachers!) absolutely loved it!
Ladybird legends!
Over the last couple of weeks the Year Two pupils have been combining their scientific knowledge of minibeasts with their creative writing, computing and art skills to produce some beautiful and informative non-fiction books about ladybirds! Each book features an attractive front cover, contents page, labelled diagram, illustrated life cycle, fact files, digital and pencil artwork, an acrostic poem and even a wordsearch. The pupils have worked so hard to produce professional books but can’t agree on their favourite page! However, they do all agree that have learned many new facts about ladybirds and are justifiably proud of their finished results!
Monet inspired masterpieces
In their Art lessons, Year Three have been learning about impressionism through exploring the work of the renowned artist Claude Monet. They began by learning about colour mixing, focusing on creating a variety of tints by carefully adding coloured paint to white. They also practiced darkening shades by adding small amounts of black to their colours. Pupils also experimented with mixing different hues of green to match the colours of leaves. Once these essential skills were developed, pupils were ready to recreate some of Monet’s famous paintings. They began by recreating one of his works on A4-sized paper in their sketchbooks, practising the techniques they had learned. The following week, they had the opportunity to choose their own Monet painting to replicate on A3 paper. They started by painting the background, using dabbing techniques to mimic Monet’s impressionistic style. Pupils mixed a variety of colours to achieve the closest match to Monet’s work. Once the background had dried, they moved on to the foreground, completing their masterpieces with attention to detail.
Dragons’ Den Showcase
Last week, Year Six impressed everyone with their brilliant Dragons’ Den showcase. Pupils worked in teams to design an invention, build a prototype and create eye-catching packaging before pitching their ideas to the Dragons. Parents played the role of ‘dragons,’ listening carefully and asking questions before voting for their favourite product. The classrooms were buzzing with creativity, confidence and teamwork as pupils explained how their inventions could help people in everyday life. It was fantastic to see so many parents supporting and encouraging our young entrepreneurs. The winning teams were announced in Friday’s assembly and celebrated for their innovative ideas and persuasive pitches. Well done, Year Six – you should all be very proud of your hard work and imagination!
EHS Prep hosts French Film Workshop with West House
After an exchange of letters, envelopes and cartoon strips, Year Six at both EHS Prep and West House Boys had the opportunity to finally meet their French pen pals. EHS Prep hosted a French Film Workshop in which the girls and boys watched a three-part play by Onatti Productions called ‘Écris-Moi’ about an English and French pen pal writing to each other and finally having the opportunity to meet. There was a twist in the story though; they believed that they were meeting a pen pal of the same gender and received a shock when they finally met at the train station in Paris! Even popcorn and a drink were provided to give it that movie feel. The children then formed groups with their pen pals to complete a Kahoot quiz based on the film they had watched, with key French words and phrases. It all became very competitive as there were prizes for the winners. An enjoyable experience for all!
