Nursery to Year Six Highlights
02 May 2025
With the wonderful weather this week, we have made the most of our outdoor space. The path to the playing fields and EHS allotment has been a well-trodden one with Gardening Club in full swing, the tennis courts in action and the athletics track being enjoyed by all.
Fun in the Sun
What a lovely first week back we've had at Nursery! We’ve loved welcoming back our returning girls and getting to know our new friends who have joined us. It’s been heart-warming to see everyone settling in so well, making connections, and learning the Nursery routines. The sunshine has certainly helped make our first week even more enjoyable! The children have made the most of the beautiful weather by spending lots of time outdoors exploring the outdoor classroom, building in the sandpit, riding bikes, and enjoying group games in the fresh air. Indoors, we’ve been busy practising our early mark-making skills, with a focus on vertical lines.
M is for Mummy!
As part of their exploration of the phoneme ‘m’, the Kindergarten girls have been enthusiastically discussing their mummies. They reflected on the many ways their mothers support them and thoughtfully considered how they, in turn, can assist their mummies. The girls also enjoyed writing about their mothers and creating detailed portraits, paying close attention to features that make each mummy unique.
Bravo Les Filles!
Reception pupils returned to school ready for the week ahead full of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn! This was very evident in their first French lesson of the Summer Term. They were introduced to a range of exciting vocabulary, including food names, colours and numbers to ten. These topics were taught through songs and games and the girls soon picked up these new words. With the help of Tilly, our French doll, pupils were confident to speak out during circle time and practise their pronunciation in front of their peers.
Bears Bears Bears!
To complement their topic on Toys this term, the Year One girls are beginning an exciting new DT project: designing and creating their very own teddy bear hand puppets! They will be putting the sewing skills they learned in the Autumn Term to good use as they bring their teddy bear characters to life. Stay tuned to see their wonderful creations take shape!
Which Direction?
Year Two pupils have been working hard in Mathematics lessons to develop their knowledge and understanding of position and direction. They started by learning how to competently and confidently use challenging terminology such as ‘three quarter turn’ and ‘anticlockwise’ to describe direction and were excited to discover that a quarter turn clockwise and a three-quarter turn anticlockwise brought their characters to the same position! Later in the week they combined this terminology with their existing knowledge of grid references from previous Geography lessons to describe the movement of both Beebots and characters around a grid. We are now hoping to discover a pirate map with instructions as, armed with their new skills, the pupils will definitely be able to locate the buried treasure!
Digital Designers
Year Three pupils designed and created their own iPad and tablet cases using felt. They began by experimenting with paper models to ensure their designs would be the right size to fit their devices before sketching their individual designs on paper. Throughout the project, they learned a variety of stitching techniques, including running stitch and backstitch. They also practised sewing on buttons and applying appliqué to add decorative details. To ensure their cases were durable, they learned how to securely finish the edges.
Each case is a unique reflection of the pupils' creativity, and they thoroughly enjoyed the process of designing and making them.
Nature as Inspiration
Year Five have commenced their research into the work of William Morris as part of a design project to create decorative tiles. These tiles will be used in the production of printed wallpaper. Drawing inspiration from nature, the students will incorporate leaf or floral motifs into their designs. Each motif will be developed into a three-dimensional form before being used for printing. We cannot wait to see the finished designs.
Creative Collage
Year Six had great fun exploring a variety of paper folding techniques during Art lessons in preparation for their exciting collage tiles project. They
experimented with different ways of manipulating paper, creating a range of folds and designs. The concertina and harmonica folds proved especially popular, as did the
creative fold-and-cut method. The classroom was full of energy and imagination as the girls shared their ideas and developed their skills. Next, they will research additional
techniques to incorporate into their collage tiles, including a selection of sewing stitches and even knitting. We cannot wait to see the results!
