News from the Head of Prep

Preparatory

16 May 2025

Memories of a child’s Prep School education should be one of joy, laughter, kindness, adventures and of endless days in the sunshine. This week has been no exception. We have been blessed with glorious weather and the girls have relished the opportunity to make dens, become farmers gathering hay, roll down the hill and immerse themselves in outdoor adventures. Getting outdoors offers numerous benefits for children's physical and mental well-being. These include increased physical activity, improved focus and concentration, enhanced creativity and imagination, and reduced anxiety and stress.

Children are under pressure, both academically and socially, from an increasingly young age and the importance of equipping them with the tools to navigate these pressures is ever more important. This week has been Mental Health Awareness week and in my assembly on Tuesday, we focused on ways to boost self-esteem and to strengthen your mental health.

Some of the ideas we discussed were - bringing nature into your lives, being kind, getting enough sleep, learning a new skill, eating a balanced diet, doing a quiet activity, getting active and escaping into a book. I also shared my top tips – questions for girls to think about at the end of each day, even when things are tough:

•    What did I do today that I am proud of?
•    What am I most thankful for?
•    What do I feel was successful today
•    What can I focus on tomorrow to help my mind to grow

As I write and reflect on this past week, which has been filled with joy both here and abroad - I feel incredibly proud of my pupils who bring beaming smiles to school every day, I am most thankful for my dedicated and diligent staff, the Year Six girls immersing themselves in French Culture on their residential trip to Château du Broutel in Northern France has been successful and tomorrow I will focus on trying to learn the final few names of the girls that I have still not quite managed to learn…yet!

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend with your families in the sunshine.
