Budding Chemists in Action

Senior School

09 May 2025

There’s more to Chemistry than bubbling beakers and Year 7 have been proving just that with a colourful experiment that brought science to life in the classroom.

Over the past few weeks, the girls have been diving into the world of acids and alkalis, learning how to identify them using Universal Indicator and the pH scale. But the real test came in the form of a hands-on challenge: could they use their new knowledge to create a rainbow in test tubes?

Working in pairs, students were supplied with test tubes, pipettes, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide solution, and Universal Indicator, and tasked with using problem-solving skills and their understanding of chemical reactions to create a spectrum of colours.

Ms O’Brien, the Chemistry teacher who led the lesson, was impressed by how thoughtfully the students approached the task. Several of the rainbows were beautifully executed and showed a real depth of understanding.

At EHS, we are proud to teach science in a way that inspires curiosity, builds confidence, and encourages our girls to think like scientists. With every experiment, Year 7 are well on their way to becoming confident chemists!
