Year 12 Academic Mentoring Programme
11 April 2025
Over the last half term, Year 12 subject scholars stepped into mentoring roles, guiding Year 11 students on how to effectively prepare for their upcoming GCSE examinations. Every Thursday, during form time, these sixth formers have prepared and delivered purposeful, constructive presentations designed to help their younger peers feel more confident and prepared.
The scholars shared subject-specific tips and tricks, practical advice on how to structure revision and also their own stories and anecdotes about the highs and lows of life at the end of Year 11. Their sessions were packed with useful resources, time-management techniques and specific advice for the exam boards studied at EHS.
Each session ended with a Q & A, giving Year 11s the chance to ask anything - from exam technique to how to unwind after a tough exam.
Top Tips from Year 12s
• Jasmine: Use past papers – they are your most vital revision tool.
• Yang: Arrive early on days of morning exams to feel calm and prepared.
• Nethara: Reread your answers carefully – you might spot easy-to-miss mistakes.
• Ellie: Don’t hesitate to go and see your teachers if you have any questions during Study Leave.
Subject-Specific Advice
• Science – Ellie: Focus on understanding content, not just memorising it. Past papers are key.
• Geography – Jasmine: Make mind maps for case studies and learn the structures of longer marked questions.
• English – Millie, Sakinah and Maya: Read chapter summaries the night before to refresh your memory of what happens where, when and to who.
• Maths – Nethara: Double check you have the right equipment for each exam and your calculation inputs - every mark counts.
Year 12 Reflections on the Mentoring Scheme:
Millie, Maya and Sakinah: “Mentoring gave us the opportunity to help and support others, build our confidence in speaking in front of others and talk about a subject we
genuinely enjoyed at GCSE. We hope our advice helps them avoid the same mistakes we made.”
