The Great Gatsby Musical Trip

Senior School | Sixth Form

06 June 2025

On Thursday 22 May, Year 12 English Language and Literature A-level students set off to London to watch director Marc Bruni’s Toni Award winning musical The Great Gatsby.  Here Year 12 Language and Literature student Emily describes the day:

We had a wonderful day out in London to see The Great Gatsby Musical. The trip included a visit to Covent Garden and a lunch stop. The day began at quarter to nine in the morning at Birmingham New Street Station. After lots of Starbucks orders and overwhelming excitement from everyone, we took the train to London Euston Station.
Once we arrived, we took a lovely stroll to Covent Garden. The square was buzzing with energy as we explored its shops, markets and soaked in the lively atmosphere, and eventually stopping for a lunch break.

Afterwards, the group gathered around a street performer who was drawing in quite a crowd, performing handstands on play bricks and doing amazing acrobatics. In high spirits, we made our way from Covent Garden to the London Coliseum to watch The Great Gatsby Musical.

The musical was a captivating adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby which we are currently studying for our A-level exam. The performance was filled with roaring ‘20s flair, live jazz, dazzling costumes, set and choreography, and incredible songs. In addition, the musical brought the novel’s themes of ambition, illusion and the American Dream, and mentioned lines from the book that we were able to recognise.

Seeing The Great Gatsby on stage was a brilliant way to bring the novel to life, further enhancing our imagination and understanding of the novel’s time period. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were singing along to the songs from the show on our walk back to London Euston Station. We arrived back at Birmingham New Street Station at 8 o’clock in the evening.

A special thanks to Ms Butler and Mrs Smith for organising this trip for the students, and for booking seats with an amazing view of the stage - we all had the best time!
