The residential trips that have taken place for girls over the past few weeks have been a resounding success. I firmly believe in the importance of providing teaching and learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Residential trips, in particular, allow pupils to navigate new situations, take initiative and make choices, leading to increased independence and confidence. They help students to learn to resolve conflicts, build meaningful relationships with teachers and peers through a unique and immersive experience. At EHS Prep, we create opportunities for our girls to grow, learn and develop into well-rounded individuals and I believe residential trips are an essential part of this provision. What they also provide, are lasting memories for staff and pupils alike.
This week, I have been lucky enough to meet with Heads from members of the Girls Schools Association (GSA) from across the country. One of whom is the new Head of the girls’ school I attended as a child. I have incredibly happy memories of my time at school, which is one of the reasons I am so passionate about providing a well-rounded education for the girls in my care. As I reminisced about my school days, I was reminded of my first residential trip, in Year Four, to a PGL Centre in Wales. I remember feeling so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to stay away from home for a few days with my friends and teachers. To be, what felt like, entirely independent – exploring new skills, having fun and stepping outside my comfort zone.
As I watched our wonderful Year Five girls rehearse for their assembly all about their residential trip to Cranedale in Yorkshire and seeing the bonds they had forged and the skills they had learnt was truly humbling. These girls have returned to school increasingly confident, proud of their achievements and walking a little taller. I am so grateful to all of the staff for supporting these opportunities for our girls, but also to my EHS parents who have entrusted their daughters into our care on their trips to Yorkshire, Shropshire or France. I am sure we are all in agreement that it was wonderful when the coach pulled up outside school and smiling faces emerged!
Wishing you all a restful half-term break.
