Animals in Hands: Creatures Up Close!

Preparatory

23 May 2025

This week, the children in Pre-Prep had an exciting and unforgettable visit from Animals in Hands, who brought along a fascinating group of creatures for a hands-on animal experience.

The children were thrilled to meet Vicky the stick insect, who showed off her amazing ability to hang upside down. Vicky enjoys munching on leaves and fruit and was a gentle introduction to the insect world. Next came Sunny and Shade, the leopard geckos. Their spotted patterns and desert origins fascinated the children. They learned that if an eagle ever tries to catch a leopard gecko, it can drop its tail as a defence mechanism. Remarkably, the tail will grow back in about a year!

Slithering in to say hello was Inayah, the Hungarian milk snake. Although harmless, she mimics the appearance of poisonous snakes to stay safe in the wild.

Ant and Dec, a pair of cuddly rabbits, were a big hit. The children learned that rabbits’ teeth never stop growing which is why they need to chew hay regularly to keep them healthy. They were then joined by Bandit the ferret, who loves to explore!

Maisie the tarantula brought a touch of the exotic, with her hairy body, eight legs and eight eyes! Kermit the mossy frog was next, camouflaged and cool, and known for living in caves.

Finally, the visit ended with Dobbie the owl, who impressed everyone with his sharp talons and big, bright “Gruffalo eyes.” It was a magical experience, filled with learning, laughter and plenty of wonder. The children came away buzzing with new facts and a greater appreciation for the amazing animals we share our world with.
