A Busy Week in Reception

Preparatory

19 January 2024

Girls have been busy developing and refining their skills in Mathematics and English this week. 'More' or 'Less' was the topic in Mathematics and this was demonstrated practically using beads or drawings.

As the 'f' and 'b' letters can be a little tricky to write, we have enjoyed using the large white board to practise writing them the right way round! In Creative Writing, we listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and then wrote the story afterwards. Reception's writing skills are now displayed in Westbourne Hall for all to see. Knowing all of our sounds helps pupils in Reception to read fluently and we are very proud to have some amazing readers.

We have taken our learning to the outdoor area too, where Reception girls made pretty hanging mobiles by winding coloured wool around twigs. They added bells and triangles on the top and now they hang beautifully in the classroom, jingling in the breeze.

In our Topic lessons, we have made musical shakers with seeds inside.  Pupils have used these in their Music lessons, which they found very amusing.  Continuing with our theme of Gardens and Growing, girls were interested to find out how baked beans were grown and processed into tins. We visited the kitchen to cook and eat beans on toast. The smell was delicious. We have also decorated our initials using different seeds.

On Wednesday, new parents visited Westbourne during our 'School in Action' morning. Girls were very excited to tell new parents about life in Reception and what their favourite lessons were. It is clear how much Reception girls fully enjoy their learning.
