Psychologists Visit Freud Museum

Sixth Form

24 November 2023

Year 13 Psychology students met at New Street station on the morning of Monday 13 November, Starbucks coffees and M&S croissants in hand, ready for a jam-packed day in London. The day was slightly halted by train delays leaving us on the tracks for over an hour longer than scheduled but spirits were still high!

Arriving at the Freud Museum we were immediately captivated by our speaker, Stefan Marianski, and we knew we had to make the most of learning from this psychodynamic expert. He expanded on our knowledge of the unconscious mind through very interesting real life examples like George Bush’s recent speech on the invasion of Ukraine. We delved into the approach and spoke amongst ourselves using our own A Level knowledge to aid the discussion.

Following this we had time to walk around the museum, answering some questions and learning more about Freud’s interesting past and how influential it was in the development of Psychotherapy. A highlight of the day was seeing Freud’s infamous couch where he conducted his talking therapy sessions throughout the 1900s.

After this we had the rest of the day to explore London (mostly just eating food and shopping in Hampstead Heath) and getting the tube to Leicester Square Christmas Market to see the lights! A few more train delays later and we were on way back to Birmingham ready to discuss what we have learnt in our next Psychology lesson. Despite the travel disruptions, a good day was had by all.
