We started the week with a trip to space for the girls in Year 5 as they visited the Stardome, an inflatable planetarium. This invaded our Prep Hall for the day as children from Kindergarten and Reception and from Woodgate Primary School also visited. The children learnt about planets in our solar system and about life on an international space station. We are sure that this experience will mean a number of our girls will have aspirations to be astronauts.

On Tuesday, we marked National Tree Week with an assembly explaining all of the positive effects that trees have on our lives. The girls were encouraged to look at the different trees around them and appreciate what they do for us. Wednesday saw a continuation of the tree theme as the girls heard more about the history of the Christmas tree tradition.

On Wednesday, evening our Year 6 netball team visited Cotteridge Primary School for their first match in the Birmingham Primary School Netball League.  The girls enjoyed the experience and demonstrated great defending and perseverance.

Whilst the Prep School is starting to show signs of Christmas decorations and craft work and preparations are well under way for our seasonal productions we started the festive season with our first event on Thursday morning at the Guitar Ensemble Assembly.  Miss Larner introduced a range of pieces which told the Christmas story and gave us all a good start to the morning.

We then ended the week with our Celebration Assembly at the start of the day. There were many congratulations for our Bebras entrants 28 of whom received either a merit or distinction.  There were also individual awards to Aisha Rashid for achievement at Stage Coach and to Tara Joshi for her participation in the Winter Music Monsters Concert. Yasmin Suliman gained an Independent Challenge Board certificate for her ‘World Without Numbers’ entry.

A number of our swimmers were also recognised for outstanding achievements. Ellise Eveleigh won bronze medals in 100m freestyle and backstroke in the Evesham Long Course Experience meet. At the same event Eliza Meade and Charlotte Smiley took 4 seconds off their personal best times in 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle respectively.  Ava Eagles was presented with her 1 bronze, 3 silver and 1 gold medals from the Boldmere Open Meet at the weekend.

Our girls are passionate about STEM subjects and in addition to their Science experience this week and their success in the Bebras computer problem solving they have also demonstrated their Mathematics skills with 6 Gold awards, 6 silver awards and 12 bronze awards in the UK Primary Maths Challenge.  Stem careers definitely lie ahead for many EHS Prep girls.

At the end of the day we gathered on the terrace for the lighting of our communal Christmas Tree provided by the EHS Parents’ Association. We are very grateful to the parents for providing a centrepiece for everyone in school to enjoy. The Prep girls and staff enjoyed some seasonal songs outside before the countdown to switch on.

Next week is a busy week with our Step Up to Year 3 and Beyond event, Years 1 and 2 ‘Christmas Around the World’ production, a theatre visit and the Year 4 Tudor Christmas Assembly.  We look forward to welcoming many parents to our events.
