Discovering Under the Sea

Preparatory

30 June 2023

Girls have been looking at 'Under the Sea' in the Discovery Den in Westbourne this week.

They have learnt new facts about star fish and octopuses. Did you know that an octopus has three hearts? Did you know that their arms can taste and touch? Or even that if they lose an arm they can quickly grow another? They are amazing at camouflage too! As a follow up they were able to create their own 3D octopus using cheerios to represent the suckers on their tentacles.

Girls also created star fish using paint and recycled bubble wrap to give patterns. There was lots of time to explore both fiction and non fiction books about under the sea where girls were able to further their understanding and learn even more facts!

A highlight for some was sharing the book 'The Singing Mermaid' by Julia Donaldson. This was followed by designing a tail of their own for a mermaid or merperson. Some girls simply enjoyed using the k-nex construction to make various sea creatures.

A great voyage of discovery for all.
