Ski fun in Jasper
28 April 2017
During the Easter holidays, 34 EHS students and four members of staff jetted off to Canada for a week of skiing in Jasper where the Marmot Basin provided the perfect backdrop for the trip for skiers of all abilities.
On the first morning, the girls were split up into various groups based on their ski experience before their ski instructors took them off for their first morning lesson. Whilst the beginners group built their confidence on the magic carpet and nursery slope, the advanced group were off exploring some of the gentler runs that would later become their warm up run each day.
At lunchtime, everyone was beaming and sharing their stories from the morning, excited for their afternoon lesson. Each day, for six days, the girls received five hours of ski lessons from fantastic instructors, with various girls moving groups as their skiing ability progressed throughout the week. Marmot Basin provided the girls with beautiful long green, blue and diamond black runs and the girls enjoyed skiing new runs every day and using different chair lifts to access different areas of the mountain. The girls shared their tales of various falls and tree hugging at lunchtimes or during a hot chocolate break on the mountain.
Exhausted from skiing every day, girls and staff enjoyed relaxing in the hot tubs and swimming pool back at the hotel before dinner time. As well as skiing every day, the evenings were action-packed. The girls enjoyed a night of stargazing at the Jasper Lodge, ice skating and a walk around the Maligne Ice Canyon where plenty of group photos were taken. Girls were also able to explore the small town of Jasper when a shopping trip was organised one afternoon after returning from the slopes.
On the return journey to Calgary airport, the coach drove through the famous ice fields, stopping off on route at the Athabasca Glacier before some much-anticipated shopping time in Banff.
Throughout the trip, girls were awarded prizes with various girls nominating their friends for awards. Each day a ‘skier of the day’ was awarded, with the winner wearing a special hat cover on the slopes the following day. Skiers of the day were: Sita-May, Lucy, Amy, Kayoureka and Omala. At the end of the week prizes were also given out to girls who had impressed their instructors the most over the week: the prizes were so popular that many other girls also bought themselves similar ‘prizes’ in Banff. Skiiers of the week were: Myra, Louisa, Hermione, Natalia and Liberty.
Another fantastic ski trip for EHS!
