Mathematics
Examination Board: AQA Syllabus B
AS Examination
There are two subject options: Pure Maths with StatisticsorPure Maths with Mechanics.
Each course consists of three modules, two in Pure and one StatisticsorMechanics. The overall weighting is two-thirds Pure and one-third Statistics/Mechanics.
A2 Examination
Three further modules as above, with the same weighting. Students must continue with the same StatisticsorMechanics option which they started in the previous year.
In both AS and A2, the Pure Maths element studies the fundamental theories and methods of mathematics, building on familiar GCSE topics and leading to more advanced topics such as calculus. TheStatisticsorMechanics elements study the applications of mathematics to real life situations.
In addition to its values in its own right, Mathematics as an A Level subject offers, firstly, the necessary entrance requirements for degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and Computer related subjects. Secondly, it offers support to a range of subjects which involve the use of mathematics: the Sciences, Geography, Business Studies, and Psychology. Thirdly, it can provide a complimentary option for those studying Arts or Humanities subjects.
Further Mathematics
In addition to the full A Level course above it is possible to take a second, more demanding, A Level with the title Further Mathematics (this is the combination more familiarly known as 'double maths'). Further Mathematics is only available to students who are also studying A Level Mathematics.
The course will consist of a mixture of Pure, Mechanics and Statistics modules. The expectation is that students taking Double Mathematics will proceed to two full A Levels.
Entry Requirements:
Entry to all courses requires a GCSE grade A* or A in Higher Level Mathematics.
