Home Economics (Food, Nutrition & Health)

Examination Board: OCR

Home Economics has always been a valuable part of the curriculum and now its role is even more important. Current concerns over health, diet-related issues and lifestyle, together with money concerns, are all addressed in this course, providing any student who takes it with a sound foundation to cope with adult life.

There is emphasis not only on developing practical cooking skills and learning about the provenance of the food we buy but also on being aware of the important position and role of the family in society today. The course also addresses the ever increasing importance of environmental issues particularly reducing waste of resources used in the home.

GCE Home Economics covers areas that are essential for a career in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing, Food Science, Sports Science, Food Development and Promotion, e.g. working as a Home Economist on recipe development and nutritional advice for a food producer, manufacturer or retailer. It can also be taken because the student enjoys the subject.

Entry requirements:

There is no requirement for Home Economics to have been studied at GCSE Level.
