Geography

Examination board: Edexcel

Geography is a dynamic subject with an up-to-date, real life content, which stresses the acquisition of learning skills - both general and specifically geographical. It is for this reason that Geography is a very versatile subject as it bridges both the sciences and the arts.

The Edexcel AS specification provides both a coherent course in Geography and a foundation for further study at A2.

The first AS unit is designed to promote an understanding of physical and human Geography through the study of the topics 'Going Global' and 'World at Risk'. The second unit, 'Geographical Investigations' involves practical fieldwork and research both locally and further afield.

The A2 units include opportunities to study current geographical topics in greater depth, as well as a valuable opportunity to prepare for the demands of a university course by the completion of a research report on one of several exciting themes.

Fieldwork is an essential part of the subject and students are expected to participate in residential fieldwork as well as local work organised in lessons.

Entry requirements:

It is expected that students will have gained at least a B grade at GCSE in Geography and Mathematics; the latter is included as interpretation and representation of statistical data are an important part of the syllabus.
