Edgbaston High School for Girls

Library News - November

During October, two popular lunchtime events were held in the Senior School Library.

On National Poetry Day, Thursday 6th October, the Library was fully occupied by budding poets. Poems written by the girls will be submitted to the Young Writers regional competition.

On Friday 14th October, eight courageous girls from Year 8 reviewed a selection of titles from the 'Booked Up' scheme, a national initiative for Year 7 pupils to receive a free book. A range of books was reviewed, including fantasy and adventure stories, stories using sporting and social realism themes and scientific facts presented in an accessible and humorous way. The girls presented thoughtful and discerning reviews to Year 7 girls during their lunch break.

We hope the reviews will help the girls choose more books from the 'Booked Up' selection, having had their literary taste buds whetted, and so achieve extra reading miles for the books.

A fresh selection of novels, to suit all ages and reading preferences, have been purchased this term. The Librarian has liaised with the Head of English, Ms Harrison, to make sure there are plenty of titles for KS3 girls when reading in English lessons (ERIC) and out of school. Girls are able to reserve books they particularly want to read. Reservations can be made with Library staff assistance or by logging on to the "Eclipse" library software.

A useful website for supporting reading activities is http://www.booktrust.org.uk/. Author features, recommended reading and news from publishers and book groups are accessible.

Year 9 Black Country Museum Project: the deadline for this is approaching. Additional material to complete an outstanding project is on display in the Library and available for girls to refer to.

The current library display features a range of information books that include web links for all the key topics within each book. It is important that pupils access reliable and well researched websites to complement their work.
