PREP NEWS
prep_logoOn Monday 21 June our week began with great news from the previous week. The girls who had taken part in the Bredon Challenge for the first time had come second. You can read about their experiences in the ‘Krypton Factor' type competition in the separate article.

Further success came at the weekend. Five girls had competed in the National Schools Swimming Relay Championships in Sheffield. We had two teams in the finals; one in the freestyle relay and one in the medley. The girls competed against 23 other schools in both events, although many other schools took part in the preliminary rounds. The standard of competition was very high and our girls were rewarded for their efforts with some excellent results. The teams were placed fourth in the country in the freestyle event and eighth in the medley relay. Our congratulations to Immie, Alice, Carmen, Tara and Maddie - a great achievement of which we are immensely proud.

Other sports news from the week includes some impressive rounders results. During the week our Year 4, 5 and 6 teams competed against Hallfield. The Year 4 team won 13 runs to 9, the Year 5 team won 18 to 6 and Hallfield won the Year 6 match by 5 runs. In a further fixture against Blue Coat School Year 5 ‘A' team were winners by 15 to 10 runs although the ‘B' team were beaten by just half a run, the narrowest of margins.

The week also saw two Sports Days for the Prep girls. Years 3 - 6 took to the field on Wednesday and competed with great determination and House spirit resulting in a win for Curie. Then it was the turn of Years 1 and 2 and this time Nightingale girls were victorious.

Some of the mums were busy too as they played both netball and rounders against West House. The netball was a fiercely competed match with West House winning 6 - 3 although we were distracted by the result of the England football match being played at the same time.

Class 5F raised our awareness of recycling issues in their assembly on Tuesday. Eco Girl reminded us of all the things we do wrong and what we should be doing to help the environment. Then each member of 5F made a pledge and told us what they were each going to do to help. This was a very thought provoking presentation and I am sure made everyone think twice before leaving taps running or wasting paper. The assembly ended with a piano solo from Sarah Mehanna who entertained us with a performance of Gavot. This week it was the turn of Ifrah Farooq who played Wonderful Tonight for us.

Certificates were awarded to Emma Khan and Naima Hamid who were placed first in the guitar duo competition at the Leamington Spa Competitive Festival. Sophia Constantinou was awarded the Regondi Trophy in the same festival for the most promising performance from a guitarist from all categories from Grades 1 - 8. A number of guitar players were also awarded their Trinity certificates.

In Westbourne the Kindergarten girls were entertained by a visit from Bhangra Tots. The girls took a magic carpet ride to India and learned about all sorts of things and they had the opportunity to dance too. This was an exciting experience for the youngsters.

Another set of visitors who spoke to the girls in Westbourne during an assembly were the police. They came to explain about their job and how they help the community.

The last week ended with the marking of Armed Forces Day. The girls in Prep and Westbourne were all invited to wear outfits in red, white and blue. The flag was raised in the morning and Prep welcomed Sir Stephen and Lady Brown to their special Forces assembly. In Westbourne a tombola was also held which helped to raise money for our two chosen charities, Help for Heroes and the British Legion.

This week has seen a tennis match for Year 5 against Warwick Prep School and the Inter House swimming gala for Year 4 girls. Year 3 has enjoyed learning about the Vikings with a very interactive workshop and many Year 6 girls have visited their new secondary schools for Induction sessions, including EHS.

The week has also been dominated by ‘Pirates of Penzance.' Indeed you may have seen the Jolly Roger flag flying to advertise the event. Year 6 performed the dress rehearsal for the Prep School and then to a packed audience of parents and friends on Tuesday and Thursday they gave their all to entertain a delighted audience. This was a triumph and a fitting tribute to Mrs Norris, our deputy head and producer of the annual Year 6 drama, who is retiring at the end of term.

The end of term which is 12.00 on Friday lunchtime (9th July) is fast approaching although we have a number of other events to look forward to before that date including Changeover Day, Year 5 and 6 Gala and Westbourne Activity Day.
