Greeks and Barbarians in Xenophon's Anabasis - Classics Lecture

Published: 27 Jan 2012

A reminder that you are warmly invited to Dr Vlassopoulos' lecture 'Greeks and Barbarians in Xenophon's Anabasis'. This is the next in the series of lectures delivered by various University lecturers hosted by the department. Dr Vlassopoulos is Associate Professor at Nottingham. He is currently working on a book titled Greeks and Barbarians (Cambridge University Press, 2012) aiming to challenge the currently prevailing model of a deep polarity between Greeks and non-Greeks. He is exploring the variety of ways in which Greeks related to non-Greeks and the complex 'middle ground' that shaped these relationships.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 31 January starting at 4.45pm in the Octagon. Refreshments will be available in the Octagon from 4.15pm. It is anticipated that the lecture will last approximately one hour. No knowledge of Greek will be required.

A new lecture, as part of our preparations for the Olympics, has also been added to the schedule: Dr Bruno Currie (Oxford) will speak on the topic of 'Ancient Olympic Sportsmen' on Tuesday 7 February.

This lecture has been arranged as one of the events to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics. Dr Currie is the Monro Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Oriel College, Oxford. Dr Currie teaches Greek and Latin languages and literature. His chief research interests are in ancient Greek poetry (especially epic and lyric), ancient Greek religion, and in the interaction of these two.

Future lectures scheduled are:

· Tuesday 21st February - The Iliad looks at the Odyssey (Angus Bowie, Oxford)

· Tuesday 6th March - Greek Athletics (Dr Zahra Newby, Warwick)

· Tuesday 20th March - My Big Fat Greek Wedding (Dr Toni Badnall, Oxford)

Everyone is welcome and I look forward to seeing you there.
