Physicists Enjoy Twilight Master Class

Published: 02 Feb 2012

On Tuesday 31 January, Year 11 pupils, Katie Cheswick, Sophie Hill, Sophie Lynn, Sukhpreet Pangli and Hayley Williamson, attended a Physics twilight master class hosted by the Physics Factory.

EHS is one of five schools in Birmingham working in collaboration with the Ogden Trust. The Ogden Trust (http://www.ogdentrust.com/) aims to encourage and promote the teaching and learning of Physics through, in part, the sponsorship of programmes and projects supporting physical science teaching in primary and secondary schools.

The pupils invited to the master class were nominated by their teachers as they have shown enthusiasm, flair and interest throughout their GCSE Physics course.

The session was active and fun; we made speakers out of yoghurt pots and paper (and yes...they actually worked), and we played with the super-absorbent chemical sodium polyacrylate and learnt that is was developed by NASA, but is now used in everyday life in disposable nappies and to create fake snow in Selfridges!

The evening ended with Sukhpreet (and Miss Thomas!) taking a ride on a hover-board to demonstrate Newton's laws of motion.

The evening was enjoyed by all, and we look forward to the next event in February and to hosting an evening at EHS in March.
