Young Gardeners Begin Winter Clean-up
Published: 02 Feb 2012
The Senior School Gardening Club has been meeting every Wednesday lunchtime over the winter at the allotment. The girls very much appreciate and enjoy their packed lunches and would like to thank Mrs Cartwright for the tasty treats.

We have now reclaimed the pond from the overgrown grasses and slimy algae. During the clean, we were delighted to find three adult frogs in the pond and we are keeping our fingers tightly crossed for frog spawn and tadpoles this year.

The panels of the greenhouse are being cleaned. Two of the greenhouse panels were damaged by strong winds over the last few weeks so thank you, Mr Abbey, for repairing/replacing the panels.

The shed is currently being painted and the gates will be next.
The rubbish which has collected up at the back end of the allotment is being cleared to make room for a tumbling composter which the girls are looking forward to filling up and rotating every week.

The perpetual spinach has continued to provide food for harvest. The broad beans and peas were coming along really well until the frost killed them all off. We have got more sown in trays in the greenhouse at the moment and will be sowing lots more outside when the soil thaws.
The girls enjoy their time down at the allotment and have already begun making plans for a picnic in summer. If you would like to join the club, please see Mrs Srinivas for a permission letter.
