Biathlon a Runaway Success

Published: 02 Feb 2012

On Saturday two teams of girls from Year 4 and Year 6 took part in the Hallfield Invitational Cross Country Competition against 7 other schools. The course, which had changed slightly from last year, was gruelling with Year 6 girls having to run up the hill section twice! The girls all ran particularly well with several even managing sprint finishes! Both of our teams were awarded second places with Megan Isaac, our Games Captain, being placed first in the Year 6 competition having run a most impressive race. These results were extremely pleasing with the girls demonstrating a determined attitude and good teamwork.

On Sunday it was the turn of 17 Year 5 and 6 girls to perform. They all travelled to Macclesfield to take part in the semi-final of the National Schools Biathlon Competition. They began the day with the 500 metre run on the track. It was bitterly cold but that did not deter the girls from putting in very determined performances many cutting their previous best times by up to as much as 17 seconds!

After lunch it was off to the pool for the 50 metre swim with the girls again giving their best. What is difficult in this Biathlon Competition is that the girls run in different heats against pupils from many other schools and it can be very daunting to be the only EHS girl in a round. The day was rounded off by the results which saw us with a team placed a most pleasing third in both age groups. We wait now for the final results to see if any of our girls have qualified for the National final which takes place at Crystal Palace.

These events were both well attended by our parents who gave enthusiastic vocal support to all our girls which was much appreciated. Well done to everyone who took part and gave performances to be proud of.
