Earlier last year, Edgbaston High School for Girls announced plans to expand Sixth Form and Senior School Library facilities having secured planning permission from Birmingham City Council.
Making an investment of £3.5m, the expansion will transform the façade of the School on Westbourne Road in Edgbaston while inside Sixth Form students will benefit from more leisure and study space - including a balcony terrace to the rear - and improvements to Library accommodation and facilities plus a new dance/fitness studio which all Senior pupils will enjoy.
Girls are getting involved in the detail of the plans to revolutionise their school by providing artwork for the social spaces, entering a competition to create the design for the hoardings that will flank the building during construction and offering ideas on the contents of a time capsule.
Staff, governors and Old Girls are involved in promoting the benefits of the expansion in facilities and will be organising a series of awareness and fund-raising events in 2010 in which parents, girls and former pupils can get involved. Updates
Friday 15 January 2010
Though the recent snowy conditions forced the postponement of the balloon launch on 7 January, which we had intended would mark the beginning of work on the new development and launch our Development Appeal we are pleased to announce that it has been rescheduled for Tuesday 2 February 2010, again with the support and participation of Nick Owen of ‘BBC Midlands Today'.
Our builders have continued to work despite the cold and wet conditions and next week will move inside School to begin structural demolition of the Library and old locker rooms. In addition, scaffolding and a material hoist have been erected in the compound by the new Reception so that the Library refurbishment can begin.
Girls and staff have adapted well to the new access routes and layout in school since the beginning of term and are getting used to sharing their School with builders!
Tuesday 22 December 2009
On the day that the school term ended the girls went home and the builders moved in! Work has continued at a pace and the school is already looking very different. The main focus of the work to date is the external hoarding and erection of the builders` work compound, and inside school the relocation of lockers, reception, library and resources. When school reopens on 6th January the builders will have secured their working areas and school life will continue as usual.
On 7th January at 10.30 am Nick Owen of 'BBC Midlands Today' will join us to launch the project and our Development Appeal. This will take the form of a balloon launch involving all our pupils. Parents and Friends are very welcome to attend this event which will take place at 10.30am on Prep playground.
Our next event will be a celebratory lunch for the Old Girls' Association to celebrate the 135th Year of Edgbaston High School. The event will take place on Saturday 30th January at 10.30am to give everyone time to tour the school at their leisure. Please click here for details.
