Year 10 Home Economics groups had an end of term treat in the form of a workshop and tasting session on dairy foods. Annie Hartwright is a Home Economist with wide experience in demonstrating and marketing food products ranging form Allinson's flour and Billington's sugar to the Milk Marketing Board. She was able to give the girls lots of interesting ideas about careers in Home Economics, which they had never thought of, including food photography, food journalism and preparing food for films; who would have thought the meat for Elizabethan feasts which looks so delicious is glazed with paint! Annie also had a lot to do with developing the Dairy Cookbook which adorns many of our bookshelves.
She provided plenty of useful nutritional information related to dairy products; we worked out if our calcium intakes were sufficient. The girls were reminded that their bone density needs building in order to avoid osteoporosis in later life.
Annie demonstrated how to make unsalted butter which we tasted along with her home made soft cheese. She added some locally produced cheeses to the tasting sessions; this gave our taste buds a treat and made us realise there is more to cheese than Cheddar!
It was a very good morning which the girls thoroughly enjoyed!
