This summer term has been a successful and rewarding one for our athletes and sportswomen. We are pleased to have the opportunity to report on all our activities and are delighted to be able to present so many girls with medals, awards, trophies and colours.
Rounders Rounders is always a popular sport at Edgbaston and this year we have seen the same popularity. The Year 7 squad have trained hard all year under the guidance of Mrs Hewison and highlights of their season include successes against King Edward VI Girls High. The Year 8 squad led by Mrs Evans achieved a number of victories, the highlight being the strong victory against Bablake School after a highly competitive fixture. This team have some notable consistent strong performers in Natasha Smith and Eleanor Burns and congratulations go to both these girls. Well done to all the players and we have high hopes for this team next year. The Year 9 teams led by Shona Williamson have had a great year. They have had large numbers at training sessions and fielded both A and B teams throughout the season. The highlight of the season was of course beating King Edward VI Girls High but Mrs Batchelor would also like to recognise the superb performance the teams put in against Princethorpe School; both umpires commented after the match that it was one of the best and most competitive rounders fixtures they had seen. The Year 10 squads once again have been an incredibly strong team; they have been simply superb and King Edward Girls High summed up this team by commented they were just "too good".
Tennis It has been another outstanding Year for the tennis players of EHS. We began the year with two sixth form teams participating in the 99th year of the Midland Girls Lawn Tennis tournament. Unfortunately they narrowly missed out on progressing to the finals but both teams played extremely well, beating some outstanding competition on a very cold wet day. Tennis club has been extremely popular once again with over 25 girls regularly attending the Thursday club after school. Year 8 and Year 9 girls have been the most regular players and as a result have made excellent progress. Look out for the next Maria Sharapova!!!! Finally, the Year 8 and Year 10 teams have once again participated in the National Schools Championships. The Year 8 Team came 2nd in their league and the Year 10 team won their league and will now progress to the regional knockout round. The Squads were outstanding throughout the term, beating KEHS, KE Camphill, and Sutton Girls School along the way. We wish them luck for the next stage of the tournament in September. The squads consisting of Grace Farrell, Ashwini Mohan, Emilia Hau-Walker, Suzy Derry, Jessica Lloyd, Katie Cheswick, Kira Watson, Eleanor Burns, Georgia Khanna, Natasha Smith, Ruth Fox and Hannah Gibbons are to be commended. Well done to all girls who participated in Fixtures this year.
Athletics In athletics we have again had large numbers at the Monday evening athletics club, led by Miss Suter and Miss Barlow. The U15 team have been superb this year and they reached the Midland Final of the National Schools competition, finally finishing in a very strong 5th place. The team should also be congratulated on all their performances as they were one of the most consistent teams in the competition. There has been some outstanding individual performances in this age group, in particular Emma Maslen for the long jump and Sam Turner for the hurdles. Congratulations must also go in this age group to Gabrielle Kinney who has been selected to represent the West Midlands at the English Schools Athletics Competition this weekend.
